I am an American living in China. I am having a harder time trying to font healthy safe foods here. In The States I enjoy salads and raw vegetables often, but here, it is just not safe. The soil and water in my area are contaminated. It is not safe to eat anything that comes from the ground raw. can steaming be hot enough to kill harmful viruses and bacterium?

Most Chinese dishes (including vegetables) are served drowning in oil. Also, pork lard is considered a luxury and can be found in chunks hidden in many dishes.

White rice as we all know is fairly worthless when it comes to nutrient value but is high in crabs. Whole grains are hard to find and expensive.

Any advice?

I have never been to China, but I am familiar with some different Chinese foods. I apologize now for the spelling of some of these items.. lol.. but sometimes chow siu (bbq pork) isn't too bad, you just have to find leaner cuts. Also, stir fry with tons of veggies and maybe chicken and/or tofu. I personally find that white rice isn't too bad to have once in awhile. Broccoli with lean beef. Har gow (shrimp dumplings) are good to eat, as long as they are steamed properly with little to no oil. Same goes for siu mai (pork dumplings)- but should be eaten in moderation. Won ton soup and other kinds of soups aren't too bad. Especially if you are making the won tons yourself with shrimp and lean pork, and using low sodium broth and bok choy or gai lan and green onion for garnish. Don't forget to use tons of bean sprouts in your cooking. Also, curry is good to use. Now I am not sure, but have you checked into the nutrition info on black bean sauce? That may not be too bad. But I am not sure on that one. I hope I have given you SOME ideas. Since I have never been to China, I don't rly know what is available to you.

A solution to be able to eat fresh raw produce is to use produce spray. You can make it yourself or buy it in the store. Here is a recipe to make your own produce spray:

http://forums.budget101.com/budget101-disc...duce-spray.html

Hydrogen Peroxide & Vinegar= effective produce spray
Do you want to serve your family clean, bacteria & virus free foods but

hesitant to buy those expensive packaged vegetable sprays? Simply put

hydrogen peroxide (3%) in spray bottle (AGAIN: BREAKS DOWN WITH LIGHT

EXPOSURE: USE ONLY AMOUNT NECESSARY FOR THE JOB!) keeping the bulk of

it in your dark container it came in; & this one called for CIDER

vinegar (taste); but use what you have on hand rather than NOT do cuz

it's gonna be rinsed off well anyway! VINEGAR doesn't break down with

light so it's fine to keep in spray bottle; Doesn't matter which

product you use 1st: AS LONG AS you use both; one right after the

other; Spritz veggies: rinse well under running water; then prepare &

serve as usual; No lingering taste of either product will remain & both

are natural substances & small amounts will not harm children or adults

if ingested.
