Ok, so last week I was called by a company for an interview with them. This was a job I really, really wanted. I called them back to schedule the interview and the lady was not there. They told me to get back with them on Monday. Well this is what I did. I convinced myself that this company would not want me because I am over weight and I did not look the part. Even though I dress professionally, clean, etc... I let myself believe that my weight would stop me from getting the job. So when Monday rolled around I didn't call back and I missed out on the opportunity that I really wanted and now I want to kick myself in the butt.
Has anyone else done this to themselves and has anyone found a way to overcome the judgment we give ourselves? I am tired of being my biggest and worst critic. -------------------- |

Yes! I have gone through this.. and I am still dealing with it. It was worse last year, when I was convinced I wasn't getting jobs because of my size, and stopped applying to jobs all together. This year, when I gave it another try, I was more confidant after losing more than 100 pounds, BUT it was still in the back of my mind. "They're not going to like how I look. They are going to think I am lazy," etc. I made myself go through it anyway, even though it was so hard and I went through a lot of mental battles and nervousness. Those feeling might always be there, I just have to try my best to push on.

The only person judging you though is you, take a long look in the mirror and try to look at you, not the over weight you, but you! Look for the good points about you, and see the beauty that you carry from within. Say to yourself you are worth this job, you deserve it. Look for it in you! Then the next time a job comes around you can get it with the same confidence you have that makes you, you! |

A few hours after I wrote this blog that company called me again for an interview. So this time I jumped at the chance to go. I decided that if they didn't want me because of how I looked then I didn't need them and they would be the ones missing out on a great person.
I went for the interview this week and I really enjoyed it. The ladies interviewing me were fun, upbeat and energetic and they also made me feel very comfortable with myself. It was an awesome experience and they assured me that I was definitely someone they wanted to add to their team. I am supposed to find out by Sunday if I got the job or not. Thanks for letting me know that I wasn't alone! -------------------- |

I am supposed to find out by Sunday if I got the job or not. So.... did you hear back from them!? I know I'm a little late responding, but I wanted to say that I totally understand where you're coming from. Not only am I self conscious about my weight, but I'm pretty heavy into the punk scene, so I'm sometimes self consious about people judging me based on that, too. I'm really glad to hear that you decided to go for it and went to the interview! You should be proud of yourself! Mental hurdles like confidence are totally the hardest to get over, and you're doing it! Congrats!

I actually just spoke to them today about my salary and when I need to start. I am currently a Personnel Manager for Wal-Mart and I have been with them for 14 years so I was a little scared of the change, but felt I really needed it. I am now going to be a Co-Manager for Harley Davidson and I am so excited. It's kind of funny that you said "I'm pretty heavy into the punk scene, so I'm sometimes self conscious about people judging me based on that, too". I have kind of a goody goody look I guess you can say but that is not who I am and I was afraid they wouldn't think I was edgy enough for the job as well as my weight issue. I dress the way I do because I'm only 5 foot and well over 200 lbs so things don't always or often look good on me and I settle for what I can find. Lane Bryant is where I was shopping, but most of the clothes there seem so much older then I feel or am. We recently got a Torrid shop in our mall so I have been checking it out and found a few things that feel like me. Thanks for all the support it really helped me decide to just go for it and see what happens. -------------------- |
